Wine Recommendation – Rose’
Happy Thursday!
I have been a fan of Liner & Elsen wine shop in Portland, Oregon for roughly 10 years. Bob Sherb, owner, personally selected the wine for my wedding. He did a great job. Recently, I asked him for his favorite Rose' for the summer. He made the following suggestions...
2008 Rigoloccio, Rosato, Maremma, Toscana IGT, Tuscany, Italy 9.99/107.00
Tuscany’s Maremma zone is home to the granddaddy of all the Super Tuscans, Sassicaia. As evidenced by this terrific 100% Cabernet Franc rosé, the region’s flair with traditional Bordeaux varietals works as well at the affordable end of the spectrum as it does in the fiscal stratosphere. Rigoloccio’s 2008 rosato shows a brilliant orange-tinged watermelon color and the earthy, herbal notes that define the noble Cabernet Franc. On the palate, the rosato balances ample watermelon and cranberry fruit alongside brisk acidity and complex notes of limestone terroir. Smoky, rich, yet totally refreshing, Rigoloccio’s rosato finishes long and clean, adding suggestions of red raspberries, wild strawberries and that refreshing herbal streak that brings Chinon to mind. Delicious and priced well below its quality level, enjoy this as you would a more expensive Chinon, Saumur or Bourgueil rosé. Lovely by itself as an after-work refresher, it will also pair well with just about anything off the grill. [http://www.linerandelsen.com/]
2008 Evesham Wood, Rosé of Tempranillo, Vin d’Une Nuit, Willamette Valley, Oregon 11.99/128.00
Last year’s debut release of Evesham Wood’s Tempranillo rosé was something of a local sensation. We loved it and sold all we could get our hands on, then lamented that we couldn’t get more. Dare we say that this year’s release is even better? In contrast to the Torre dei Beati Cerasuolo, Evesham Wood’s rosé is a limpid, pale copper-salmon color and more restrained aromatically. This wine evokes the great Bandol rosés of the Domaine Tempier. It has the smoky aromatics and textural richness of a Bandol rosé, accented by the inherent acidity of the Tempranillo grape. Hits of white raspberries, watermelon and wild strawberries complete the wine and make it the Oregon rosé sensation of the season. At its price, it’s also a really great value. Buy all you need to get you through the warm weather, but please don’t hesitate. As with last year’s release, only 220 cases of this wine were made. [http://www.linerandelsen.com/specialfocus.html]
