2007 Bodegas Volver Tempranillo
I've been invited to a paella fest this weekend at a friend's house and I'll be toting a few bottles of this wine from the Castilla-La Mancha region deep in Spain. The 2007 Volver "La Mancha" is bold and beautiful, tasting of cherries, dark plums and something earthy and appealing — a tremendous wine for the price.
It's a big wine, one that lends itself not only to all of summer's grilled meats, but also to rustic dishes such as paella, which mixes chorizo and rabbit or chicken, say, with saffron-imbued rice. The tannins are soft, but still there, indicating that it will hold up for at least a few more years, if you put some bottles away and forget about them.
